DC Comics: Bombshells Returns with New Series, Bombshells United

Following the news from writer Marguerite Bennett that the DC Bombshells would return in a new digital-first series, DC Comics has officially confirmed the series today along with an official release date for the first issue.

The new series will be titled Bombshells United and will see the return of both Marguerite Bennett and Marguerite Sauvage when it launches this August. Sauvage is set to work through the first arc on the latest Bombshells series. According to the press release:

The Nazi-punching fan-favorite heroes of DC Comics: Bombshells are returning for a brand-new digital-first series this August with BOMBSHELLS UNITED. Wonder Woman, Batwoman, Supergirl and more continue to fight the oppressors of World War II as they head to a new location—the United States!

In the press release from DC Comics, Bennett said that Bombshells United will refocus the story in an alternate history and ask the question: if you could live this life over, what would you do differently?

“We journey back to different theaters of the war, and will tell stories of defining moments of the characters there — both the stories as they unfold within the Bombshells universe, as well as information on how the true events played out,” Bennett said.

While the series will be set in an alternate history timeline, Bennett said that she draw inspiration from World War II — a dark chapter in American history that has been ignored and erased from “our national narrative.”

“I read a variety of novels and history texts, took several trips to Manzanar and spoke with volunteers,” Bennett said. “Then I deferred to a variety of Asian-American creators and editors in order to make sure that the story I was creating was respectful, and that I was telling an honest and truthful story, that drew heavily from the experiences of those who underwent this atrocity, and survived with power and grace. I want to highlight something that should never be forgotten or removed from our story.” The new series will begin in 1943 with Wonder Woman making her way to Arizona. After Cassie Sandsmark and Donna Troy are forced from their homes under Executive Order 9066, Sandsmark and Troy call for Diana’s help. However, in order to save them, she’ll need to confront the very armed forces she fought beside on the European front.

The new Bombshells series will also bring with it a new structure; each arc will focus on a particular hero or group of heroes to allow the creative team to dive deeper into each storyline. The cover, by Terry Dodson and Rachel Dodson, to the first issue can be seen below.

The first chapter of Bombshells United will launch Friday, August 25 with new chapters available weekly. Print issues will collect two digital chapters, each beginning September 6, and will ship twice monthly.
