Seeing is believing. With so much information out there in the world, stories travel faster than ever and it’s hard to know what to believe. However, a good photo can put all uncertainty to rest, whether it offers confirmation of some sort of wrongdoing, a snapshot into the past, a peek behind a closed door, or proof that a man can fly. That’s what James “Jimmy” Bartholomew Olsen does—he captures pictures worth a thousand words as a photojournalist for The Daily Planet.
An exceptionally bright and eager young adult, Jimmy joined the esteemed staff of the paper as a photojournalist and cub reporter. He faced the usual rookie challenges—chasing assignments all over Metropolis and beyond, following up on leads and juggling his co-workers' coffee orders. His dedication and enthusiasm paid off, as Jimmy managed to land on Editor-in-Chief Perry White's good side and often found himself teaming up with star reporter Lois Lane.
He had friends in more powerful positions, too. Jimmy became buddies with Clark Kent and Superman, eventually learning that they were the same person. But in spite of his close relationship, Jimmy has never been envious of the Man of Steel’s abilities—though he has undergone transformations that have briefly given him powers—nor has Jimmy tried to take advantage of Superman's powers for personal gain. What he has done is allow himself to be inspired by Superman and become a positive influence on the people and community around him. Jimmy Olsen may not possess superpowers, but he represents the potential to be a hero that exists within us all.
